Harding grad Rod Smith officially a Buckeye PDF Print E-mail

(The article below APPEARED on the www.o-zone.net Ohio State Buckeye Web Site)

No Automatic Redshirt for Smith Despite Late Arrival
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS — It took him a little longer than anyone involved would have hoped, but Rod Smith is finally a Buckeye.

The freshman tailback out of Fort Wayne, Ind. had fans in Columbus questioning his existence when he failed to report to Ohio State, first in the summer and again during fall camp.

Despite Jim Tressel’s insistence that Smith would arrive “any day,” the Buckeyes practiced 29 times during the month of August without him while he straightened out his academic affairs, but that won’t mean an automatic redshirt for the 6-foot-3 running back.

“He's not an automatic redshirt,” Tressel said Tuesday during his weekly press conference previewing the Miami game.

“I think conventional thinking, because he missed all of preseason, would be I don't know if he could get enough reps now to be able to earn the right to go in before someone else, but you never know with injuries and so forth.”

One of the highest-rated prospects in Ohio State’s class of 2010, Smith was on the sideline for OSU’s season-opener against Marshall, but didn’t officially hit the practice field for the first time as a Buckeye until Sunday.

“I thought he looked good,” Tressel said of his first impressions of the young back.

“Now, maybe it was because he had fresh legs and everyone else has training camp legs and so forth, but Sunday I thought he was flying around. He caught the ball in the back field once or twice on Sunday and I'm anxious to see him.”

A powerful back with good speed and excellent vision, Smith racked up 1,855 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior at Paul Harding High School last year. He finished his prep career as the SAC conference career rushing leader with 6,625 yards and 66 career touchdowns (eight-best in Indiana high school history).

Rated as the No. 6 back in the country by Rivals.com, and No. 8 by Scout.com, Smith has the look of a back who could contribute as a freshman at Ohio State, but he enters a loaded backfield in the Columbus. The Buckeyes had five different tailbacks carry the ball in their opener, including redshirt freshman Jaamal Berry and true freshman Carlos Hyde.

Tressel said after the game that Hyde rolled his ankle, which could open the door for another big back like Smith to get some carries in practice, but it’s hard to think they will put him out there ahead of Berry or Jordan Hall—both of whom had good showings in the opener—not to mention veterans Brandon Saine and Boom Herron. With those five leading the way, the Buckeyes rushed for 280 yards on 41 carries. Over the last six games dating to last season, the Buckeyes have outgained the opposition on the ground by +1,138 yards (1,568 to 430) – an average of +189.6 yards per game.

That doesn’t mean Smith can’t help them at some point, but that point may not come until next season, when the Buckeyes lose Saine. Until then, Smith is just happy to be a Buckeye…finally.

“He's got a smile on face, he's happy to be here,” Tressel said.

“You've got to handle adversity, sometimes you get a little bit of a delay or a hiccup or whatever.”

FORT WAYNE – Week three in the high school football season saw league races begin to take shape.

In the feature game of the week, Bishop Dwenger continued its dominance of the SAC with a 41-3 thumping of previously undefeated North Side. Remound Wright ran over, around, and though the North defense for 127 yards and four touchdowns.

Bishop Luers stayed in tune with Dwenger, defeating winless South Side 38-12.

One game back of both Dwenger and Luers is Snider, who put a 38-6 thumping on Northrop.

Over at Wayne, the Generals stayed in the race with a 55-20 win over winless Concordia.

Finally in the SAC, previously winless Harding chalked-up a non-league victory with a 33-21 win over the Aces of Hicksville, Ohio.

In the NHC, New Haven moved to 3-0 with a 35-7 spanking of DeKalb. The Bulldogs ran (Te’Vaughn Hurse recorded 268 yards rushing) and passed (Lucas Salerno was 7-12 passing for 124 yards and a touchdown) its way to the “W”.

Carroll made it two-in-a-row with a 14-6 win over Norwell. Cameron Wisely tallied two rushing touchdowns for Carroll.

Leo handed Adams Central its first loss of the season as the reigning ACAC champs kicked off their title defense with a 43-15 victory. The Lions improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Jets fall to 2-1.

In Woodburn, Heritage won its first game of the season as the Patriots topped Woodlan 27-21. Will Knapke led the Patriots with 106 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Connor Sheenan completed 6-of-10 passes for 114 yards and a score.
